Nowadays, we can easily extract our information about any topic without going one by one in multiple websites, which saves both our hard work as well as our precious time just with the help of – Search Engines. In this blog post, we will explain – what is a search engine and how does work in brief –   


What is Search Engine?

Search engines displayed the pages of multiple websites which are related to our search or that we ask for in the search bar. It allows us to easily access the information that we looking for. It is helpful to save precious time and hard work.

Today, if we need to find out information related to any field. We don’t need to visit multiple websites and find manually one page to another. It is possible only with the help of search engines like – Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, Yandex, and many more.

In simple words, the Search engine is a tool of the Internet with the help of it we can easily extract or access useful information from various websites.


History of Search Engines 

In 1990, After the establishment of the World Wide Web (www). The first search engine in the Internet world was Archie. Archie didn’t answer the questions of users like Search Engines. But, it is used to download files from websites.


It was created by McGill University Canada's three computer science students was – Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan, and J. Peter Deutsch in their college days.


After this, Gophers a new form of Archi came in the year. This was followed by a web crawler search in 1994, which still works today. In 1995, the world's first popular search engine launched known as – Yahoo.


After this, some other search engines come to like as – Magellan, Excite, Infoseek, Northern Light, and AltaVista also came on the market but they did not available last long.


In 1997, the king of the Internet World launched known as Google which completely changed the definition of the Internet.


How Does Search Engine Work?  

Most people, they don’t have any idea – how does search engine works, when they write their search queries. The Search Engines' working process is mainly based on 3 stages. 

Crawling Crawling means by which the search engines can find out what is on your web pages, title tags, and meta tags, and checks the multitude of pages repeatedly to see if you have changed and copy any changes found.

Indexing Once a Google crawler crawls your web page, the copied copy is returned to the search engine and is stored in the Google database. After indexing the website will be ranked on search results.

Ranking  After the crawling and indexing process, the crawlers will provide the relevant content, when the user search query in the search engines.

      

Types of Search Engines 

Search engines can be divided their working into 5 categories.

1. Crawler Based Search Engines 

Search engines that run only with the help of spiders, crawlers, or bots. They don’t need any person. It is known as crawler-based search engines.

2. Directory-Based Search Engines

The search engines which only select websites are seen by a team of people, in which there is no website that will automatically show. It is called directory-based search engines.

3. Hybrid Search Engines 

The user who uses search engine crawlers/bots as well as human selected things are known as hybrid search engines such that – Google, Yahoo, Bings, and many more.

4. Meta Search Engines  

The Search engines that don’t keep millions of websites on their database. But, what people search for, it shows to the people by searching in search engines like Google and Yahoo. 

5. Specialty Search Engines 

Search engines that are made to for special demand of a particular area including – Local Search Engine (JustDial), Shopping Search Engine (Yahoo Shopping), and many more.
